Self Reliant Diver Specialty Swimmer

PADI Self Reliant Diver - €180.00

With the move of PADI into the Tec diving market, the PADI Self Reliant Diver Specialty Certification is a natural follow on. PADI still firmly believes in the buddy system, however PADI also recognises that experienced divers, after being trained in the skills, knowledge and safety techniques of diving in a self-reliant manner, can be prepared to dive independent of a partner.  Those experienced divers, through proper training (as in the PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty course) learn knowledge and skills in dive planning, life support system readiness, adaptive training, equipment preparedness and diving responsibly to compensate for situations when diving alone.

Qualifications for Course Entry

  • Be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or have a qualifying certification from another training organisation.
  • Have a minimum 100 logged dives.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Successfully complete a dive skills assessment by a PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty Instructor.

Course Composition

The course includes three open water dives, which may be conducted on one day. The Instructor will review information necessary to safely complete each dive with divers before the dive. You may do this through pre-dive briefings or structured discussions. The Knowledge Review must be completed and reviewed before the diver is certified. The maximum depth for open water dives is 30 metres/100 feet. The dives must be conducted within the no decompression limits of the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP) or dive computer.

Equipment Requirements

  • Standard dive equipment as outlined in the General Standards and Procedures Guide of the PADI Instructor Manual.
  • Surface marker buoy, such as a delayed surface marker buoy (DSMB) or lift bag with at least 30 metres/100 feet of line.
  • Redundant gas source – pony cylinder, twin cylinders with isolation valve or side-mount configuration. Redundant gas supply must be configured so that the diver can access it with one hand.
  • Redundant depth gauge and bottom timer, or dive computer.
  • Redundant surface signalling devices (both visual and audible)
  • Knife/cutting tool (except where locally prohibited)
  • Slate and pencil
  • Back-up mask (recommended)
  • Student Manual

During the course you will learn how to calculate your gas consumption and hence your gas requirements. Amongst many new skills and refreshing some previously learnt skills, you will also learn simulation of out of air and its requirements using independent gas supplies; swimming under water without a mask for a distance of at least 18 metres; use of a compass for navigation to more exacting standards; DSMB deployment and the use of a freeflow regulator using an alternative independent air source and the calculation of SAC (Surface Air Consumption) and its relationship to gas consumption at depth.

The timescales for course study, knowledge reviews and the three Open Water Dives, will need a minimum of 2 full days but allowance needs to be made for self study.
